My First MUN: Discussing Biological Weapons WELMUN@22

My First MUN: Discussing Biological Weapons WELMUN

It is nostalgic for me to find out that one year ago, I delivered this speech at the Welham Boys’ School Model United Nations 2022, where I represented the United Mexican States in the United Nations General Assembly 1: Disarmament and International Security Committee. Now, as an intermediate level MUNer, I find many flaws with my level of argumentation, and structural constructions. Let me take you back to my first speech!

Thank You Honorable Chair. Greetings to the committee at large. Today, this committee is here to talk about one of the major problems affecting our world which causes great loss of life, biological weapons. The delegation of the United Mexican States is going to present the different cases of bioterrorism and biological warfare around the world so that the UN could access the threats and find a resolution together.

Biological weapons are extremely dangerous and lethal as they can use the Human DNA to their advantage and release. It is important for we find a solution to these dangerous problems. While its origins date back to the BC era, it became more common during the Napoleonic wars.

However, the major use of this technology was during both the world wars, when Germany was using biological warfare to win battles.

They released pathogens and other microorganisms like anthrax and glanders This kind of sabotage was carried out in the USA, Romania, France, and Spain, and later in Argentina and Norway and even some parts of Mexico. Even though it did not affect our country on a large scale, it still affected our most trusted allies that are also part of the UN.

This was only the story about World war I but In World War II, imperial Japan attacked Chinese civilians with plague, cholera, anthrax, glanders and other diseases, killing thousands. The Japanese Imperial Army had begun supporting a biological weapons enterprise in Manchuria in the 1930.

The delegation of Mexico believes that these countries acted this way because it was under control of a dictator. they could not have used biological weapons if there was not one. The Geneva Protocol made sure not to use these weapons but still were being manufactured. The BWC did not repeat the same mistake and banned the manufacturing of these weapons. However, the countries who did not sign the BWC like Israel still can manufacture biological weapons.

It is very important to find a better solution to this problem rather than the usual “wearing a mask”, “treatment of the sick” and banning are solutions that don’t seem to work that well. convincing the rest of the countries to sign the BWC, better disposing of biological waste are some of the few solutions. We also need to have better alarming systems to detect any leaks in the different research facilities, which could stop many pathogens from getting out in the world.

Thank you, Honorable chair, for giving this delegation an opportunity to speak. I hope

we will reach a resolution that will help us end this problem, once and for all. The delegate would like to yield the rest of his time to the chair.
